In august 2021 the Taliban again took power in Afghanistan. The seizure of power meant the end of the war, but not of the suffering. In recent years, the economy has collapsed, unemployment has skyrocketed and more than half of the country's population of nearly 40 million today lives on or above the threshold of starvation.
The glimmers of light for the Afghan people are few. But - as in all wars and disasters - man has a unique ability to find his way and find the small joys in life. The country's ancient national sport – Buzkashi, where men on horseback fight over a sheep carcass – is one such joy.
