The civil war in Sri Lanka was one of the bloodiest wars in modern times and some 70 000 civilians have been killed. Heavy fighting took place between the Sri Lankan army and LTTE until January 25, 2009 when the LTTE's last stronghold, Mulaitivu, was captured and twenty-six years of war was coming to an end - but peace still far away. Left are hundreds of thousands of refugees without help and protection. The road to a united Sri Lanka is still long.
