Mashiftad Gul is 16 years old. In half his life, he has taken responsibility for the family's sheep. He belongs to the Kuchis, Afghanistan's ancient nomadic people. In the spring, they leave the warm Jalalabad in the east and move with all their livestock to Wardak province in central Afghanistan where it's not as hot in the summer. In recent years, the Kuchis found it increasingly difficult, the government has sold off land that belonged to the nomads for generations to speculative developers. - This is the only life I know, and I like it, Mashiftad Gul says.
